Four Life Lessons From BeReal

The authentic social media app that has people capturing the moment.

I was definitely judgmental of BeReal at first.

But what I expected to be another fad app — something equivalent to Pokémon Go or House Party — has become a new favorite of mine.

It’s quickly becoming one of the most downloaded apps, defining itself as ‘not another social network’.

How does it work? Once a day at an unspecified time you’ll receive a notification from the app to take a picture. The picture will be taken from your front and back camera simultaneously, in effect to capture the moment fully.

You will then be able to see any friend’s posts on your feed, which is particularly satisfying for any long-distance friendships and family members you no longer live with.

As I’m becoming a BeReal loyalist, I wanted to go through some of the key takeaway lessons I’ve learnt from the app.

At a family wedding recently, I had a cousin of mine ask me why I felt the need to retake my mediocre BeReal an entire eight times that morning before posting.

Exposed! She was right, the BeReal itself was nothing special, but I still took the time to create what I envisioned to be the perfect low-effort post.

Embarrassingly, yes, people can see the number of retakes you’ve done. Lesson learned! Let this shame you into being authentic, taking one shot and as close to the notified time as you can.

There’s a vulnerability I’ve found in doing this. So next time you want to retake or skip the BeReal for the day maybe consider more of what you are afraid of by posting at that exact moment.

I prefer my BeReals to capture the mundane lives of my friends. Although for myself I wouldn’t mind more times I was highlighting the best part of my day, I like getting to see the regular environment of my friends and finding the beauty in mine as well.
