My Experience At Delicate Arch

I hiked to the most iconic arch in Arches National Park. I started at 6 PM and it was still hot as balls.

Why is it that we humans feel the need to take a photo of ourselves standing next to things? Are the natural wonders of the world not beautiful enough on their own? Or is it that we feel like we need to prove that we were there?

These were my thoughts as I watched tourists waiting in line to stand between Delicate Arch as their hiking partners took a photo of them from afar.

It felt like Disney land. That, or the photos I’ve seen of the top of Mnt. Everest. At least this area isn’t riddled with human trash like Everest now is.

I sat amongst the crowd of people on the rocks above Delicate Arch and honestly felt some sort of sadness for my fellow humans waiting in the line below.

There was a woman next to me drinking a coke. Another woman was taking a selfie of herself with the arch in the background as she made kissing faces.

I guess I can’t be too upset at these people. They did make the trek up here and deserve some credit for that.

Of course, Edward Abbey was on my mind as I sat there and people watched. Remembering I had brought Desert Solitaire up with me, I took it out and started reading. Without even realizing it, I opened the book up to the exact part where Abbey was describing Delicate Arch to the reader.

Looking at the arch again, past the people standing in the middle of it, I tried to see it as Abbey did back…
