Arriving August 18th this year, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 will be the most advanced flight sim in terms of graphics and functionality to be ever made. The map for the Flight sim is literally the whole world. You can fly anywhere from a small strip in-country or a commercial airport like London. Or even fly over your own house. These visuals are generated using Bing Maps Sattelite Images and Microsoft Azure cloud.

Being a pilot involves numerous things and some of them that can be mastered with Flight Sim are Air Traffic Control Communications, reading Airport Diagrams, interpreting Sectional Charts, following Checklists, and operating Navigational Equipment.

ATC communication is nerve-wracking for every student pilot. And the only way to become confident with that is practice. But the chance to talk to ATC is very limited if your main airport for operation is non-towered, and this is where VATSIM comes into play. VATSIM provides a network where sim enthusiasts from different simulators fly in one virtual world. The network is completely professional and does not tolerate any misbehavior. They even have supervisors to enforce good decorum. And to top it of, it is completely free.

Other than perfecting your ATC communication it will also help you understand airport diagrams when ATC gives you taxi instruction, Because you will have to repeat instructions, and having a chart handy will give you a better perspective. Right after departure, you will have to navigate to your destination and that requires you to understand navigational charts that provide you with landmarks and airspace for different regions. Avionics and following Checklist are also an essential part of becoming a pilot and MSFS 2020 simulates them very well. Things like adding a waypoint and knowing how to use your airplanes’ GPS are essential because it’s not as simple as Google or Apple maps.

After a few flights on the VATSIM network, things will start on fall in place and you will be able to operate your aircraft with a greater understanding of procedures and when you go for your flight lesson with your instructor you will have all this knowledge which will surely give you the confidence to be a better pilot.
