Interesting Story of the First Black Woman Elected to the United States Congress

She was an amazing figure in the history of the USA. Her acts and performance in different fields of life made her prominent in history. She didn't confine herself in the typical sphere of life. She worked hard and took her place in every field, which she selected for herself. She wrote in her autobiography about herself :

She indeed went beyond traditional patterns to move in life. She made her own identity, and she rightly utilized her strength to strongly stand in life.

This is the story of Shirley Anita St. Hill the first black woman to become a part of the USA congress.

Shirley Anita St. Hill was born on November 30, 1924, to immigrant parents who migrated to the USA in the USA in 1921 and 1923. Charles Christopher St. Hill was her father and Ruby Seale was her mother.

Her Father Charles Christopher St. Hill was a laborer in a factory. While her mother was a skilled seamstress and domestic worker. Shirley Anita St. Hill had three younger sisters. Her mother due to her work was unable to properly look after her children so, in 1929, children were shifted to the grandmother in Barbados.

Shirley Anita St. Hill returned to the USA in 1934. She was entered in Girls’ High School in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, which proved a phase of great learning for Shirley. She participated in the debate contests and won many prizes. In 1946 Shirley completed her Bachelor of Arts from Brooklyn College, and this was the beginning of her long career which later on was going to change the history of black women in the USA.

She met a Jamaican immigrant, Conrad O. Chisholm, in 1940, and later on, they both got married in 1946.
