3 Former Child Actresses Who Overcame Addiction

These three stars have inspired fans by going public with their sobriety.

There are some alcoholics who develop addictions late in life, but for many of us, it starts in our teenage years (or even younger). Fortunately, no matter how early an addiction begins, it’s still possible to overcome it. Below are three former child actresses who each struggled with addiction from a young age, but are now proudly sober:

You probably know Jodie Sweetin from her role as Stephanie Tanner in Full House. Sweetin grew up with the role: She began acting on the show when she was five years old and was fourteen when the show wrapped nearly a decade later.

Soon after Full House went off the air, Sweetin started drinking. She ended up struggling with alcoholism throughout her teenage years and her twenties. In an interview on Steve-O’s Wild Ride (hosted by fellow recovered addict, Steve-O) Sweetin said “I thought I’d be the girl to die with a cocktail in my hand.”

Fortunately, Sweetin was able to turn things around. She quit drinking in 2008, and after a brief relapse, quit again in 2011, this time for good. After getting sober, she began working at a treatment center for addicts. She stayed there for five years, becoming the director of operations, until eventually returning to acting full-time.

Hayden Panettiere, star of Heroes and Nashville, just went public with her addiction struggles last week. In an interview with People, she said that she was fifteen years old when someone on her team began giving her pills to “pep” her up for interviews. She then turned to drinking, quickly developing an addiction.
