Millions of pounds of food are eaten everyday ,but no one takes hard look at what they consume. We never think about where meat comes from or how much sugar fills our favorite drinks. Food is such an important factor to our everyday lives, that we never take the time to scrutinize a nutrition label.We humans have a stronger desire to eat the food immediately and neglect where the meal originated. Any person can find hundreds books and movies that talk about the legitimacy of healthy foods ,but one film shines that I strongly recommend everyone should watch once. Food Inc directed by Robert Kenner is a food documentary that exploits several of the United States most prominent food industries to reveal their questionable methods of feeding the inhabitants of the United States population.

The first question every amateur researcher should ask when watching a documentary is “How legit is this film”. The movie originated from a novel called “Fast Food Nation” originally written by Eric Schlosser. Eric had studied at several universities ranging from Princeton to Oxford. He worked for numerous newspaper chains and was highly regarded as ambitious journalist in his muckraking journalism. His major breakthrough was “Fast Food Nation” a novel that dives into the world of food and it’s dark innerworkings. The facts shown in the film were all based from the novels research that Eric conducted so the viewer should not feel duped by any ploys that they suspect.The viewers having a reliable source is important because they need to feel confident that their information is credible. Instead of having a curious consumer try to read a book that takes time, they can watch a film that runs less than two hours. With all the information coming from the novel, readers might ask who made their burger.

The film uses aggressive imagery to demonstrate questionable methods used in the meat industry to produce their meats. The movie shows how meat farmers function in high demanding industries that requires them to produce high amounts of meat for the cheapest price available. Consumers who eat meat may see their meats as gorgeous slabs of meat waiting for the grill ,but it went through a dark journey from the factory to the package. People have to understand why their meats are filled with unnecessary hormones because it is misdirected them in their nutrition. Although their chicken dishes appear appetizing, the factories where the chickens were processed show a disturbing process. A typical chicken will take four months to grow to full size ,but a mass produced chicken takes three months with more weight. Some chickens were so large that they could not walk a few steps without being able collapse on the ground. The film then shows gruesome imagery of chickens packed in a small house that contained more than a thousand chickens with no sunlight hitting them.The viewer then is flooded with brutal black and white film stocks of Chicago Meat Packing factories in the 20’s the vintage tapes show the older methods of mass producing meat during the Industrial Revolution. These scenes are showing how methods from the past are continuing to advance in not the most ethical methods. Meat Choppers were at risking of chopping their hand off and falling into the vats of steaming meat .Viewers can scoff thinking the old methods were barbaric but the methods used in the 20’s are not vastly different than today’s method. Overtime the industries keep the same ideology of quantity over quality.

Dealing with everyday chores can be difficult enough to manage ,but preparing meals stacks more stress. After watching the film the viewer should feel motivated to skew away from big business food brands and explore more locally grown food. Watching this film will inspire people to pursue diets rich in proteins and nutrients that do not derive from poorly produced products. We may buy food that we assume is filled with the nutritious vitamins we need ,but it has more ingredients that we would never expect. Local farmers provide healthier options that lack any type of unnecessary hormones that are given to plants. Customers have the power to not buy these foods and resist the big corporations. People how the opportunity to vote, protest and shop locally. Food Inc should be more than a movie, but a gateway to a new healthy and invigorating lifestyle
