Sometimes it is Worthwhile to Do It Twice

It is a big world out there. There are a lot of things that need to be visited or discovered. There are opportunities and experiences that one can stumble upon, expanding your knowledge and wisdom. So why do anything twice?

Visit Mount Rushmore in the United States? Once you have done it, seeing it a second time is just looking at a big mountain that has been carved into faces.

The Grand Canyon? Wow, for the first time. Meh, it’s a big hole in the ground the second time.

Big Ben in London, amazing. The second time, it is a big clock.

Eiffel Tower. Great Pyramids. Coliseum in Rome or the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Hopefully, you are seeing a pattern here.

I hate duplicating efforts. There are so many things we should try to enjoy and have so little time to enjoy them all. Disney for the 17th time? No thanks.

Yet when it comes to creating something new or something that you have read that moves you to the core, there are opportunities that are demanding a revisit.

When creating something new, we should strive to have the highest quality possible out of a product or a solution at the point of delivery. In order to accomplish that, we need to ensure we take the time, go slow and smooth to ensure we do it right the first time. However, many times that does not happen and we have to go back and fix something we did not do right the first time.

Multiple iterations of a product or a solution are sometimes needed for success. Although the first revision of the product or solution was reasonably successful, getting it out into the wild proved to be a beneficial decision. It allows you to gain market share. You are able to get significant feedback and a greater understanding of what the next iteration(s) are needed for continued success.

The meme “do it right or do it twice” is certainly a good motto to live by in business. It should be followed closely to have a better chance of an optimally running business. One thing we also know is that there are multiple ways to skin a cat since we are throwing around cliches. Meaning there is more than one way to complete a particular task. Some may be more effective than others, but the key is getting the activity complete.

There are times when you build into your strategy to do something twice. Like described above, the opportunity to get a product out into the market. You wanted to deliver it soonest without waiting for it to be perfect. You shrieked “ship it already” to get it out there, but you knew and planned to revisit the solution. You knew you had to go back and work it again. In that effort, you made the tactical and strategic decisions necessary to keep moving forward.

However, repetition can always fall on the opposite side. When doing something, the same thing, multiple times but expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. You cannot expect to make the same mistakes twice. Plan, do, check, act. Observe, orient, decide, act. Adapt and overcome.

While making the decision (early) that you are going to do these efforts twice, you learn to adapt your delivery to deliver a finished product. You would have taken the time to map a solution that gives you the right opportunity for success. You took the correct amount of time to work the solution, even if it required artificial constraints in order to deliver the right solution at the right time.

There are times when there is the value of doing something twice. Yet when you do this, make sure you are making the right choice. What do you want to do twice? What do you want bin and move on to the latest, greatest? Make a choice and keep moving forward.
