THE TEGLA LOROUPE REGUGEE SUPPORT PROGRAMME

The Tegla Loroupe Refugee Athletes Training Center was set up in late 2015 to train talented refugees in athletics and many others sports with the aim of taking them as part of the Olympic Refugee Team to the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

After her retirement from competitive athletics, Tegla Loroupe took action in helping people in the Greater Horn of Africa embrace peace by taking part in sports, especially athletics through her foundation’s annual peace races. These were held in regions close to warring communities. Some of the participants in these races were refugees who had fled war in their home countries and are now in refugee camps in Kenya.

When Tegla observed the talent in these refugee participants, she decided to petition the IOC to give a chance to those athletes who had a strong potential in advancing their athletic careers. The IOC President Thomas Bach backed the idea and petitioned his country’s olympic committees to suport the idea. This resulted in the establishment of the Refugee Training Programme in Kenya that is supported by Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation, the UNHCR and Supported by IOC itself.

We exist to empower refugees to gain self-sufficiency and will continue to do that through educational and support programming. Given the challenging environment for refugee empowerment, we are working to diversify our funding sources beyond reliance on grants. We need support of community partners now more than ever.

We believe it is our foundation’s moral imperative to continue supporting refugees and to empower hundreds or more per year in future fiscal years. With that said, we will continue to serve refugees regardless of recent actions taken to limit the support of refugees.
