Inspector calls book review

The inspector calls is a book set in 1912 and first aired in 1945 to a post world war 2 society. This is important because when the play was set, England had a very strong class system which meant the rich never encountered the poor. The overall war effort brought people of all backgrounds together. For example, they all shared the same air raid shelters and the men in the front lines fought together. The author of the book JB priestly was socialist and the meaning behind the play was to forget the years before the war and for England to move on and lose the class system.

The play has various characters of various ages and backgrounds. Having said this my favourite character would have to be Sheila. Sheila is my favourite character because she was really moved by what was said and really did want to change, her ways. When it came to questioning Sheila was the most honest with everyone else trying to keep as much as possible to themselves. She also helped other characters (Gerald) come around and see what they had done.

Parts of this book were well written to suit the 1945 audience like Mr Birling saying that war was impossible. This was clever because priestly knew this would get a reaction out of the war battered people. Mr birling also says the titanic is the finest ship there is and will never sink which again would anger members of the audience no doubt some of them knowing some one on the ship that fateful night. This would show people they didn’t want to go back to living like this.

I thought the role of the inspector was very clever, I would say its Priestley’s narrative of the play. This to plant ideas without making it obvious giving the play a strong meaning. The play could be likened to a fable due to it having a strong life lesson for the characters in the play and all the people watching.

However, I felt frustrated by the ending being a cliff hanger. I thought everything had fallen into line but how wrong was I? Now not to spoil the ending for anyone yet to have read the inspector calls but it’s interesting to say the least.

I feel this book has a wide range of people who could read this as it has various genres from relationship drama to detective stories and everything else in between. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a real page turner.
