Finding Magic in the Mundane

Do you ever think about how you could change your entire life in just a few days? You could quit your job, drop out of school, pack all your things and just drive until you can’t anymore. You could start over and just like that, no one knows you, everything is new, and you never have to look back. Your old life is gone and everything that held you back is lifted off your chest and you can breathe.

Does your mind ever drift when you’re doing work and you start thinking about the old days when Club Penguin and Poptropica filled your time? You had no cares in the world and all you had to think about was whether your DS was charged and your math book was filled out. The weight of the ‘real world’ hadn’t been placed on your chest and you felt light.

When you’re walking through nature do you imagine how wonderful it would be if you could just sit down and feel the sunlight on your body as it casts bright beams of light through the trees? Does your imagination ever run wild and you start to think about how magical it would be if you lived in Italy and could walk along the cobblestone streets every day? Or how enchanting it would be to run through the green hills of Scotland? All of your worries lifted off your mind as you stare into the great expanse of the beautiful world you live in.

Do you ever long for something more than the mundane, grey life you live? Me too. Every day the weight of life rains down on me like heavy, concrete bricks. Sometimes it hits so hard it hurts. It makes me feel like my life has no meaning. All I do is go to college and work at a frozen yogurt shop, how meaningful can that truly be?

But then I get to thinking, where did all these fantasies come from? No one I know gets to parade around Europe just for fun for their whole life. These crazy dreams come from books, from movies, from TV shows, which are all fantasies. They’re not reflections of how life truly is. Life is waking up at 7 am, begrudgingly getting out of bed, and going to a dead-end 9 to 5 job. Life is boring. Mundane. Eventless. No one truly gets to have that much fun in life, right? That’s how ‘real-life’ seems to be portrayed and honestly, I’m already feeling the weight and stress of adulthood, but does it have to be this way? I don’t want to fall into a rut and feel completely burnt-out midway through life. Silly as it sounds, I crave newness and adventure. I want a life that is meaningful.

But how is this possible? I’m destined for a 9 to 5 job in a world that thrives on routines. How do I find newness and adventure in that? Is there a way to find magic and excitement in the mundane routines of life? I definitely think so, but the question is how?

To me, magic is the feeling of enchantment. When a feeling whirls through you and you feel excited, anxious, and intrigued. But I rarely feel this in everyday life so I decided to do some research on how to find this ‘magic’. The article I read told me to keep my mind open to the possibility of magic and to seek it out in every situation. To stay focused on the present moment and to use my imagination and creativity. But most importantly, to see life from a new perspective. To imagine my life through the eyes of a child and see the world filled with adventure and excitement.

It’s all a mindset. Choosing to see the adventure as your driving to work. Looking at the autumn trees whirling by and imagining the stories that could come from them. Going somewhere new, experiencing something different, not settling for mundane routines, and choosing to be enchanted with the life you live.

I guess the most important thing I need to remember is that life is what you make of it. If I decide to rule out the possibility of a great and exciting life, I’ll probably experience this mundane routine everyone talks about. But if I start choosing to view my life as a new start, a place of magic and adventure, and chose to have a mindset of an excited child, maybe ill experience some magic in this mundane life. Magic happens when you chose to not give up, even when you want to. I won’t give up.

Here’s to a life filled with magic 💛
