Open Letter to Republican Senators

Dear Republican Senators,

I was a Republican. I worked on a Republican Congresswoman’s campaign for two cycles and I interned for a Republican Congressman. I voted for Donald Trump in 2016, but I knew he was destroying the Republican party and I could no longer support him or it.

It is absolutely shameful that a mere 10 House Republicans voted to impeach Trump. If an insurrection is not grounds for impeachment, then you need to explain where you draw the line? Trump himself is the biggest threat to national security. This has been demonstrated numerous times. He does not embody the law and order persona he claims as it is not universal. He disparages the crimes of political enemies and is unable to differentiate between peaceful protesters and terrorists. But he is unwilling to condemn his own supporters when they become violent.

It is time for Republicans to gain back their integrity because they truly have lost it all if they choose to let Donald Trump go unpunished. The arguments about the lack of time are weak and inexcusable. Our country is under attack. The Capitol was attacked one week ago and five people died. Today was the record high for Coronavirus deaths. We are a week away from the inauguration and there are countless threats of violence across the country. There are 20,000 National Guard members in Washington DC, and they are sleeping on the floor of the Capitol which has not happened since the Civil War.

It is a time to heal. The only way for us not only to heal but to send a message to Trump supporters who believe harmful conspiracies and commit violence against their fellow American is to impeach and remove Donald Trump from office. This is not about the next election or partisan squabbling, this is about who we are as Americans. We cannot tolerate or allow terrorists to come to the Capitol at the beckoning of our so-called President without unprecedented recourse.

Anyone who tries to paint Trump as a godly man. Put simply, he is not. He is the furthest thing from it. Trump is hurting the gospel and Christianity more than anything else the evangelicals claim. It is time to wake up. He is not some great hero or prophet. He is the worst President in American history. He divides us and it is time to unite against him.

Donald Trump has not only failed the Republican party but he has destroyed it. He has proven that he lacks any moral compass and refuses to take responsibility for his many failures. If you are voting not to remove him from office to save the party…all I have to say is what’s left to save?
