Should You Join Band?

Marching band is one of the many classes Eastside has to offer. Unlike other classes, this one is very different. Marching band is a sport that competes with other bands from different schools. It consists of making figures on a football field while playing a musical piece using a wind or percussion instrument as color guard dance and twirl their flags/rifles.

Band Class

By taking Marching Band you don’t need to take PE and you’ll get another band class called Concert Band. This class is optional since it is an elective, but it’s highly recommended. In band class, they teach you how to play an instrument of your choice. The best part is that you get to learn how to play an instrument for free while private lessons are expensive.

Fun

Band gives you the opportunity to make new friends and have fun while learning how to play an instrument. To join Marching Band, you have to attend Band Camp which takes place in school during the summer. In Band Camp, you learn the basics of Marching Band and get closer with the other band members by doing fun activities.

It’s Good For You

In case you didn’t know, music is good for the brain. According to an article on John Hopkins Medicine, “When 13 older adults took piano lessons, their attention, memory and problem-solving abilities improved, along with their moods and quality of life.” Marching Band is very good for exercise, and it’s actually quite fun especially since you’re with friends.

So Should You Join Band?

When asked this question to Eastside freshman Lenette Gomez, she said, “Yes, band is great, fun, and helps with feelings you may have trapped inside. When you learn how to play an instrument you fall in love with music and will really like going to that class (band class). It’s also a great way to get smarter because it uses both sides of your brain.”

Freshman Jonathan Guzman was also asked this question in which he responded with, “Yes because it is fun and you get to learn how to play an instrument.”
